  THE DANCES - Contemporary

Fusing together some of the key contemporary dance styles and influences of Graham, Cunningham, Humphrey and Release technique. Contemporary dance involves learning original and innovative dance sequences and travelling combinations.

Martha Graham is known as one of the pioneers of contemporary dance. Originally an exotic dancer, she became bored and decided to go to Denishawn to study dance and choreography. Here she started to establish herself with new techniques and innovations in modern dance and popularised contemporary throughout the 1930’s.

Much of the music used in contemporary dance was directly influenced by Martha Graham’s association with composers such as Dello Joio to make classics such as Diversion of Angels with large orchestras. This style of grand orchestral music is commonly used today.
