| Odissi is an East Indian classical
dance from Orissa, India. Odissi comprises lyrical, flowing movements
and sculpturesque poses. Odissi movements are characterized by the
"s" shape the body makes in a tribhanga pose. The fascinating,
delicate torso movement in a rhythmic and lyrical way blending harmoniously
with the scintillating and lilting music of Odissi gives a spell-bounding
experience and a tranquilizing effect on the mind.
Its gracefulness and lyrical beauty have made it tremendously popular
not only with students and performers but with dance connoisseurs
and new audiences the world over.
This beginners class starts with a set of exercises designed to
develop strength, stamina and flexibility. Steppings are practiced
with the folk-like rhythms of a percussion instrument called the
Mardal (two-headed drum). Upon perfection, the student progresses
to learn dance items.
