Rumba is a popular Cuban music and dance, born in the barrios
of Matanzas and Havana. Danced in couples – Rumba is the
‘chase’, the man performing virtuoso steps –
in the erotic game between the couple that culminates when the
man tries to ‘vacunar’ his partner, and the woman
to cover herself.
Integrating a variety of rhythms: yambu, guaguanco,
Columbia and tirebilla – Rumba is famous for its syncopation.
Originally played on cajon (the Spanish box) or other wooden instruments,
it is now played on the Bata drums, bongos and other minor percussive
instruments.
